Camino de Santiago Photo of the Week – March 17, 2013

Why are you walking?

Why are you walking?

Provocative questions are a big part of the Camino experience — and not just the ones that come up over dinner. Many of them push on a question that can be very difficult to answer: why are you doing this and what do you expect to happen when you arrive at the end? The closer you get to Santiago the more likely you are to come across urban graffiti like the question in this week’s photo. These questions can be like mental sand traps, but I don’t think the pilgrim really needs to have a good answer. If anything they point out how rich the pilgrim’s experience can be outside of rational explanation. But if you have a great answer, by all means get your spray paint can out and have at it.

This week’s image was pulled from Anita Mac’s terrific Travel Destination Bucket List. She sums up her feelings about her international journeys:

“My bucket list just keeps growing! The more I cross off – the more exciting new destinations and activities I find! I have been fortunate enough to travel a considerable distance over the years. My love of many things, including travel, cycling, kayaking and photography fit together like hand and glove. I have to keep asking myself….where to next?”
